Focus on Latin America Seminar Series

50 Years Since the Coup: Economic, Cultural and Sociological Readings of Dictatorship and Post-Dictatorship Chile

Date: September 28, 2023

Time: 5:30pm

Venue: CPD 3.23

In this seminar, 3 Chilean academics established at 3 different Hong Kong universities will discuss the impact of the Chilean dictatorship and its aftermath from their own academic disciplines. 11 September 2023 marks the 50th anniversary of the coup d’état led by General Augusto Pinochet who, with the backing of the United States, unseated President Salvador Allende (1970-1973) and put an end to what was then known as “The Chilean Way to Socialism”. The dictatorship lasted 17 years, until 1990. The manifold changes that came since then can still felt very acutely today. Please join us for a reflection on what has come to pass and what is envisioned as the future of this country.
