The Korean Studies Programme at the School of Modern Languages and Cultures is excited to announce the establishment of a new academic initiative, the Yang Won Sun Honorary Visiting Professor Programme. With generous support from the Yang Won Sun Foundation, the Korean Studies Programme will appoint and host a distinguished scholar of Korean Studies. During the period of appointment, the scholar will offer credit bearing workshops for students, give public lectures, and provide mentorship for both students and HKU faculty members. This new program will enrich the learning experience of students and serve the broader public by deepening its knowledge of Korea.
Professor Heonik Kwon of the University of Cambridge will be the inaugural Yang Won Sun Honorary Visiting Professor during the 2022-2023 academic year. He is an elected member of the British Academy of Arts, and the author of several acclaimed books, including After the Korean War: an Intimate History (Cambridge University Press, 2020), the 2022 winner of James Palais Book Prize of the Association of Asian Studies. He will be in residence at the University of Hong Kong in March 2023.
The School of Modern Languages and Cultures would like to express its utmost gratitude to the Yang Won Sun Foundation for its generous support and guidance in establishing this new project. Based in Hong Kong, the foundation supports Korean Studies-related ventures around the world.
More details regarding the Yang Won Sun Visiting Professor Program will be provided shortly via Korean Studies’ website. For inquiries, please feel free to reach out to the Korean Studies Programme Director, Dr. Su Yun Kim (suyunkim@hku.hk).
