Gender performativity, stereotypes and counter-normative identities in contemporary Japan

Speaker: Dr. Marta Fanasca (Department of Japanese Studies, KU Leuven University)

Date and time: December 9, 2021 (Thursday), 11:00 am – 12:00 pm (HK time)

In this talk, Dr. Fanasca will discuss counter hegemonic gender identities in contemporary Japan and their representation in Japanese media. She will focus on the phenomenon of Female-to-Male crossdressers known as dansō and on the entertainment world related to these crossdresser girls. Particular attention will be given to the world of dansō escorts, the focus of her PhD research, and her first research line. However, due to the COVID19-related mobility limitations, she will also discuss an alternative research line she has developed in the last two years, focused on how counter hegemonic gender and sexual identities are depicted and negotiated in Japanese manga and anime.
