Description

Japanese-medium Elective


The course aims at a detailed description of the phonological systems of the two languages, both Japanese and Cantonese. It will start with an introduction to the phonological inventories and phonetic variants on both segmental make-up as well as prosodic structure. Students will be trained to transcribe the two languages in both International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA) and the most common sets of transcription used in foreign language textbooks. The psychotypological differences between the two languages and English and/or Mandarin will also be introduced. 


Students enrolled in JAPN4088. Japanese language IV (Part 1) or JAPN4099. Japanese language IV (Part 2): Capstone experience are not eligible to take this course.
