Description

English-medium elective

This course introduces the rich tradition of ethnography about Japan. By surveying ethnographic writings from the late 19th century to the present, this course explores the variety, complexity, and change in Japanese culture and society. In addition, this class also investigates methods and ethical concerns of the anthropological study and representation of Japan. Readings primarily consist of ethnographic writings by anthropologists and sociologists, but also include literary nonfiction and journalistic pieces.
