Description

English-medium elective_This course offers a panoramic view of Japanese literature – of representative authors, works, genres and themes – from the beginnings in the 8th century through the early 19th century. In addition to introducing students to the major traditions of pre-twentieth century narrative, poetry and theater, the class also explores the rich cultural and social worlds of premodern and early modern Japan, such as the Heian period imperial court, medieval warrior society, or Edo-period urban commoner culture.
