Introduction to postwar and contemporary Japanese literature

This course is an introduction to the literature from postwar and contemporary Japan between the late 1940s and the 2020s. Students will read a diverse range of literary texts from writers with different backgrounds. Through close readings of novellas and short stories, the class explores a variety of themes relevant to the narratives and their historical context. All readings will be provided in English translation.
