YL Chan studied general linguistics and Japanese language at the University of Hong Kong. Soon after graduation from HKU, she started her studies in Japanese linguistics at Tokyo University of Foreign Studies. After coming back to Hong Kong, she taught in the Hong Kong Polytechnic University for two years before joining the Department of Japanese Studies.
